What's included in an exterior detail
Pre-rinse and foam. Loose grit is lifted off before anything touches the paint. Skipping this is the single most common cause of wash-induced scratching.
Two-bucket hand wash. Wash mitt goes into a rinse bucket before it goes back into the soap, so the dirt you just removed never gets dragged back across the panel.
Chemical decontamination. An iron remover dissolves embedded brake dust and rail dust. Tar and sap get a dedicated solvent.
Mechanical decontamination. Clay bar or clay mitt pulls out whatever the chemicals didn't, leaving the surface genuinely smooth.
Wheels, tires, and wheel wells. Cleaned individually with wheel-safe products, then tires dressed with a non-sling finish.
Polish (as needed). Light machine polishing removes oxidation, water spotting, and swirl marks. Deep scratches that catch your fingernail generally need multi-stage paint correction - we'll tell you honestly what's achievable.
Protection. A paint sealant or carnauba wax, depending on what you want out of it. Sealant lasts longer - typically 4 to 6 months - and is the better choice heading into winter. Wax gives a warmer glow but needs reapplying more often.
Finishing touches. Clean and treat exterior glass, dress trim, wipe door jambs, and polish chrome and exhaust tips.

Can you detail my car in winter?
Exterior detailing needs above-freezing temperatures for products to work and water not to freeze on the panels. In deep winter we may need a heated garage or to reschedule. Interior work is available year-round.
Sealant or wax - which should I get?
Paint sealant is synthetic and lasts roughly 4 to 6 months, which makes it the better choice before a Chicago winter. Carnauba wax gives a warmer, deeper look but typically lasts 6 to 8 weeks. Choose sealant for protection, wax for appearance.
Is exterior detailing worth it on an older car?
Often yes. Decontamination and polishing frequently recover more gloss on a neglected 10-year-old finish than on a newer one, because there's more to remove. It also stops oxidation before it reaches the point where only repainting fixes it.
Will detailing remove scratches from my car?
